Exam prep

IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, DET, Cambridge — and how we score your practice.

Which exam should I take?
It depends on where you're applying. IELTS is the safest bet for UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. TOEFL iBT is preferred by US universities. PTE has the fastest results (5 days) and is fully AI-scored. Duolingo English Test is the cheapest (₹4,200) and shortest (1 hour) but accepted by ~5,000 programs rather than every university. Use our score-compare tool to see your score across all five.
How accurate is the AI scoring?
Within ±0.5 bands of an examiner score in 89% of our internal benchmarks, measured against 4,200 graded IELTS samples. For your peace of mind every practice can be escalated to examiner review (+3 credits) — a real Cambridge-CELTA examiner re-grades within 24 hours.
Can I practice for the Speaking section without a tutor?
Yes. The Speaking module records your answer, transcribes it, and scores you on Fluency, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Pronunciation. You get a written breakdown plus a colour-coded transcript showing the exact words that lost you marks. No human in the loop unless you escalate.
How many practice attempts do most students need?
Median: 60–80 over a 6-week prep cycle. That's roughly 12 to 16 full mock tests plus targeted practice on your weakest module. The Crack the Test plan (100 credits) covers this range with room for retakes.
Do you teach the exam, or only test me?
Both. Each module has a short library of strategy videos and worked examples — usually 6 to 10 hours per exam. Most students alternate: a strategy lesson, then 2-3 practice attempts under timed conditions.

Cross-exam score conversion

Is the score-compare tool accurate?
It's approximate. The five exams test slightly different skills, so a perfect 1:1 mapping doesn't exist. Our conversion is built from the official concordance tables published by ETS, Cambridge and Pearson, plus our own student outcome data. Always cross-check the minimum a target university actually publishes before applying.

Universities & applications

Shortlists, SOPs, deadlines.

How do you build a shortlist?
From three inputs: your real test score, your budget (tuition + living for 1–2 years), and your post-study work-visa goals. We don't sort by rankings — we sort by likelihood of admit and likelihood of a useful work visa at the end. The Full Journey plan includes shortlists for up to 8 universities.
Will you write my SOP for me?
No. We edit your SOP, sometimes through multiple drafts, but we don't write it from scratch. Admissions offices have gotten very good at spotting ghost-written essays — and they're the wrong incentive anyway. Our alumni reviewers (recent grads from the universities you're applying to) tell you what's working and what isn't, in writing.
Which universities do you have relationships with?
We have direct admissions contacts at ~80 universities and shortlisting access to 800+. Direct contacts mean faster turnaround on application-status questions, not preferential admits — your file still goes through the same committee as everyone else's.
Can you help with PhD applications?
Yes, with caveats. PhD admissions are advisor-driven, not committee-driven, so we focus on advisor-fit research, cold-email coaching, and statement of research framing. Most of our PhD students hit 2–3 funded offers from a 5-school shortlist.

Visa & relocation

F-1, Tier 4, 500, work visas, paperwork.

What's your visa approval rate?
96% across all countries when we file the paperwork ourselves. The 4% that get rejected are typically borderline financial profiles where we flagged the risk in writing during onboarding — the student chose to proceed anyway. Visa-only plan includes one free re-file if the rejection was on grounds we missed.
Which countries do you support?
Student visas: USA (F-1), UK (Tier 4), Canada (study permit), Australia (subclass 500), Germany, France, Ireland, Netherlands, Singapore. Work visas: UK Skilled Worker, Canada PGWP support, Germany Blue Card. For everywhere else we'll be honest if we don't have the depth.
How long does a US F-1 visa typically take?
2 to 8 weeks from I-20 receipt to visa stamp. Two weeks if the student profile is clean and a Mumbai/Delhi appointment is available; 8 weeks if there's a 221(g) administrative processing flag. We don't promise specific timelines — we promise that paperwork won't be the bottleneck.
Do you handle the SEVIS fee, biometrics and DS-160 myself?
We pre-fill the DS-160 with you on a screen-share call so you can verify every line, book your biometric appointment for you, and remind you of the SEVIS fee deadline. The student must attend the visa interview themselves — we send a 60-minute prep call the day before.

Pricing & refunds

What things cost and when you get money back.

How does Bandlingo make money?
Three streams. (1) Direct plan fees from students. (2) Referral fees from a small set of universities we list, disclosed on your shortlist. (3) A small percentage from education-loan providers when you use a referral. Counsellor time is paid out of (1). Your shortlist is never sorted by (2).
Can I pay in EMIs?
Not directly. For larger plans we partner with education loan providers (Avanse, HDFC Credila, Auxilo) who can structure our fee plus your tuition into a single student loan. Counsellor walks you through the trade-offs on the first call.
What does the refund policy say in one line?
If we miss what we promised in writing, you get a refund. If you change your mind, you get back what we haven't spent on your behalf. Read the full policy for plan-specific numbers.
Are there any hidden costs?
No. Test booking fees, university application fees, visa application fees, courier and translation fees are passed through at cost with the invoice attached. We never mark these up. Forex transfers via BookMyForex carry their own fee, paid to BookMyForex, not us.

The app

Devices, downloads, account.

Which devices is the app available on?
iOS 15+ and Android 9+. No web version. We tested on devices going back to a 2018 OnePlus 6 and an iPhone SE 2nd gen — everything still runs.
Does it work offline?
You can take a practice offline if you've pre-downloaded the question set. Scoring requires network — there is no offline grader.
How do I delete my account?
Settings → Account → Delete account. We confirm by email and complete the deletion within 7 days. Billing records are retained for 8 years per Indian tax law; everything else is wiped. See the privacy policy for the full retention schedule.

About us

Who's behind this.

Is Bandlingo a team or just one person?
Right now it's a one-person operation, run out of Chandigarh. I handle counselling, edits and visa paperwork myself, and bring in a small network of trusted partners (examiners, immigration lawyers, alumni reviewers) when something needs a second pair of expert hands. More on the about page.
Will Bandlingo still exist in 5 years?
That's the plan. The honest answer: we'll exist as long as the unit economics work — student fees minus refunds minus infrastructure. We don't raise venture capital, so we're not on a growth-at-all-costs treadmill. If we ever shut down we'll refund all unconsumed credits in writing, 90 days in advance.
Can I work with you?
Probably — see the careers page. Solo right now, but the first hire is on the horizon.
